As with any "How long does 'x' last" question, when concerning automobiles, it depends greatly on how you take care of them. If you change the fluid (in an automatic) every 50,000 miles or so, they can last a very long time. If you neglect it then good luck getting 100,000 miles out of it. It also depends on what type of conditions the transmission is subjected to. Stop and go driving, as well as pulling a trailer, or mountainous terrain will be much harder on a transmission.
