there is no way to self test the obd-2 systems unless you buy a scan tool from your local parts store. with this scanner you will be able to retreive trouble codes then look them up with the supp;ied manual. however this only works in an vehicle with a working computer. your other option is to get a computer (same year/model) and swap it out.

I don't think the timing is adjustable. I drive a '98 s10 with the 2.2l, and mine has a distributorless system GM started using; it uses ignition coils, and the timing is automatically adjusted by the computer.

yes, the only changes from 94-97 models and the 98-04 models exterior wise was the grill, bumpers and some molding...the interior is also very different but there is a lot of parts that interchange between them
