In my opionion, If you don't know how to get into the steering column. don't work on it. Alot of people think they can do something to their vechile and they actually end up making the problem worse, or messing things up. Find a friend or call a mechanic and ask them specificley how to do what you are doing. If you can find a friend that knows how to work on it would be best..
If you still would like to tear into it. start by taking the steering wheel off. You can do that by popping off the cover in the middle of the steering wheel, under that you should find a hefty bolt..Then undo any wires make sure that they are not going to be hot and laying around.
Then If you want to take the whole thing out, open the hood and undo the steering column... it doesnt really matter where you undo the column under the hood. But you should do it right where it joint is.. yOU ARE now free to remove it.. making sure any electicrial wires are not laying around...
If you wanted to leave it in and just take it apart inside of the truck. Then after you get the steering wheel off you will be looking at the blinker device, make sure and not break that, alot of them are plastic and can and will break very easily...
To better help you can you tell me wheather it is an automatic or not.. And what excatley you want to do to it?
Thank you
Allison
Check either on the steering column down by brake pedal or on side of transmission Check either on the steering column down by brake pedal or on side of transmission Check either on the steering column down by brake pedal or on side of transmission Check either on the steering column down by brake pedal or on side of transmission Check either on the steering column down by brake pedal or on side of transmission
it probably doesnt have a steering column tilt on it
Top of the steering column, it pushes down and pops back up on the 2nd try.
You do have to take the steering column loose and drop it down so you can get your hand up to the small clip that holds the brake booster rod off. But you do not have to take it all the way out. Just drop it down.
Pull the steering wheel. This requires a puller and a lockplate compressor. Once the wheel and the lockplate are off , there will be three screws holding in the switch. The cable is threaded down the steering column and the connector is about halfway down the column just beyond the edge of the dash.
there are three 10mil bolts in the column you have the steering wheel off and the lock plate and the trun assembly out and the bolts should be visible one on the bottom and two on the top Update - Sept 25, 2008 Actually on the 90-91 Chevy S-10 tilt steering column there are four E10 Star bolts that need to be tighten. Because of the age, I would also recommend that the two upper column bearings be replaced as well. There are three column bearings total, two uppers and one lower. The bearings can be purchased at your local Chevy Parts dealer. Both upper bearings come as a kit assembly GM part# 7844651, the lower bearing is part# 7805700. When the headlight switch fails, you'll need to replace the entire combination switch. Here is the procedure to replace the headlight switch on your Chevy Cavalier: 1) Unscrew the screws on the bottom and top of the steering wheel column cover, using a screwdriver and pull the bottom and top of the steering wheel column cover forward and down to remove it. 2) Unscrew the two screws that hold the headlight switch to the steering column. Pull the headlight switch off the steering column. Unplug the electrical connector running to the headlight switch. 3) Connect the electrical connector to the new headlight switch and secure the headlight switch to the steering column using the factory mounting screws and a cross-point screwdriver. Reassemble the steering column cover.
On my 2001 it is to the right of steering column just under edge of dash next to center console. On a bracket facing down.On my 2001 it is to the right of steering column just under edge of dash next to center console. On a bracket facing down.

about midway down the steering column
Yes. Just take the U clamp off the bottom of the steering column and it will drop down so you don't need to take off the steering wheel.
it is on the top of the steering column 3 or 4 small bolts you will have to take the bolts out that hold the steering column up let it down just a little to get to the bolts on the switch. put your hand on top of the column and move the turn signal up and down until you feel the rod to the switch moving then you will know witch switch it is. Its not as bad as it sounds. once you get all the plastic out from under it.
