Buy a timing light at any auto parts store.
Hook it up as the instructions show (the number 1 cylinder is the front one on the drivers side).
Loosen the distributor hold down enough to be able to turn the distributor by hand (but no too loose!)
Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance line.
Start the engine and let it warm up.
Point the timing light at the timing indicator on the front of the engine, and pull the trigger.
Observe where the mark on the harmonic balancer is in relation to the numbers on the timing indicator. Sometimes it helps to put a little dab of white paint on the mark on the harmonic balancer, so you can see it easier.
If the mark does not line up with the correct timing number, slowly turn the distributor one way or the other, until the mark lines up with the correct number.
Tighten the distributor hold down, and double check the timing.
Turn off the engine, disconnect your timing light, and re-connect your vacuum advance.
If your distributor has points in it, you may also have to set the dwell for best performance.
How do you set distubitor timing on pontiac 455?

Hoo I set the correct timing on a 1993 mazda protege
You can not set the igitniton timing yourself. You can check it but not set it.The timing is ran off a crankshaft sensor.Idle timing is 27 degrees
its set by the ecu
The ignition timing is probably controlled by the computer, and cannot be manually set. Check to see if it has a distributor, if it does it may be adjustable, if not, it is not adjustable.
To set the ignition timing on a Ford Probe GT 95 with an MX engine, remove the two 12 mm head bolts holding the distributor in place. Then rotate the distributor to set the ignition timing.
It requires an ENGINE SCANNER to set the ignition timing on that year of engine.
