I'm assuming that the end of the cable broke off and can no longer be pulled open from the interior hood release. There are two solutions to this problem. The first would be to replace the entire cable. In this case, you will need to open the hood. Which brings us to the second solution, which is to cut the old hood release cable about a foot from the end of it. You can access the cable with the hood closed by reaching your arm up under the front bumper until you can see your hand through the grill of the car. Then find the 1/4" thick black cable and cut it about a foot from the hood latch end. Then use pliers to pull the silver metal wires inside the cable until the hood opens. Then you will see your hood latch and where the cable attaches to it. Now if you just want to be able to access under the hood and don't care for an inside release, thread this short end of the cable through the grill or leave it hanging. You can use pliers to open the hood from now on. This is the method I used in two of my previous Celebritys. If you want to replace the cable, follow the cable you cut back through to the firewall and remove the weatherstripping grommet that it passes through. Then remove the driver's side kick panel (below the dash, forward of the driver's door and feed the broken end of the cable through the firewall. then disconnect the short end of the cable from the hood latch. Attach the new cable to the kick panel and feed the cable through that firewall, making sure to run it through the firewall, then the grommet, then around the underside of the left fender edge, and to the hood latch. Connect the end of the new cable to the hood latch. Then reconnect the kick panel, put the grommet back snugly in the firewall, and adjust the length of the cable until the system works properly. This is hard to explain, but experience trying to replace the cable is the best teacher. If I left anything out, please edit.
If the cable is broken you should replace it.
To replace the speedometer cable on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity: According to my factory service manual: 1. Remove the trim panel underneath the steering column. 2. The cable is held in place by a quick release button. Reach up by the steering column and push the quick release button and pull the cable off. I like to attach a wire or string to the cable so that I have something to pull the new cable in with. Then under the hood: 1. Pull the speedometer cable out of the dash, if you used a wire untie it. 2. Follow the cable to the other end at the transaxle. Unscrew the nut that holds the cable to the transaxle, pull the cable out. Reverse these steps to install the new cable. Be careful to follow the route of the original cable.
its electronic, there is no cable
Before anything you have to remove negative battery cable to avoid to get a shok from that. You will have to release the bolts to replace the starter.
If the speedometer is not working it probably needs a new speedometer cable. If the speedometer is actually broken either take it to as speedometer repair shop or replace it.
It is attached to the throttle body exactly opposite the cam/lever with the cable(s) on it.
Buy the Cable , then remove the screws that hold the broken cable and attach the new cable back.
I pretty sure it doesn't have a speedometer cable, it is electronic.
There is no speedometer cable on that vehicle. The speedometer is driven electronically.
If the hood release cable on your 1989 Chevy Celebrity is broken at the inside pull handle you can simply pull the cable out a bit, then cut off the outer housing leaving the center cable. You can pull on that bit of cable and unlatch the hood. If the cable is broken at the actual hood latch you could try: The grill is held on with six screws, remove them and take the grill out. Then use a hook and reach in between the top of the radiator support bracket and the bottom of the latch mechanism and catch the lever with the hook. Pull the lever and release the latch. This may take multiple tries to get it right. Of course you want to change the cable as soon as possible, these methods become real nuisances quickly.
Length of cable does not matter, as long as the connection to both instrument cluster and transmission are correct.
The hood release cable snakes into the cabin of the car through the firewall. To replace the cable remove the old wire. Zip tie the new cable to the old one and pull it out. This will easily snake the new cable into place. Install the new cable on the release and lever.
