The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. To check if it's working, sit inside the car with the windows rolled up and the radio off. (You want it to be real quiet) When you turn the key to ON (NOT to start) you should be able to hear the fuel pump whirring. You'll only hear the pump for a second or two, then it will stop, as the required fuel pressure has been reached. This should be enough to tell you that the pump is working, according to my Haynes manual. (A good thing for all of us to have on hand!) FriPilot

I need to know where the fuel pump is located and how to get to it on a 1996 Pontiac sunfire gt
If the part number is the same and the configuration is the same then sure.
yes
tug the hose Drop the fuel tank, disconnect lines, remove pump and unit, reverse procedure to install.
I get about 35mpg, but mine is stripped of all interior.
No, not just because you ran out of gas but you should replace the fuel filter.
It is in the fuel tank, and expensive ($300 USD)
fuel press. regulators often leak because the seals dry out. it is easy to replace the regulator and it should come with new seals.
where is the fuel filter located on a 2003 Pontiac sunfire
Near the gas tank. It's an in-line filter.
