They've hidden them in the fuel tanks. You'll have to drop the fuel tank. After you've pulled the pump, be sure to check the metal fuel line that goes from the pump to the top of the tank. If it has a leak, your motor will seem to run out of gas when the fuel level in the tank goes below the level of the leak in the line. Your fuel gauge may read half full but your van won't run until you fill the tank.

On my 1989 E350 motorhome, I had a weak fuel pump near the fuel filter. I replaced that and the problem went away. The pump in the tank was fine.
I would check on top of the intake manifold in front of the carburetor, at least that's where the fuel filter is on a 1984 LTD Brougham 3.8 liter carburetor engine.
