You need to buy the proper tool, its 2 solid wire shaped like a horse shoe with small balls on the ends. Take both u-shaped tools and insert them into the four holes and push in and the pull the whole unit out.
*Cut a coathanger bend it so you have 2 U shapes and use that, it's difficult but it can be done.

AS far as i know there is a special too; used to disengage the stero you can order it here www.installer.com/parts/index.html You can make the tool by bending two pieces of wire coat hanger into a "U" shape. To use the tool insert the pieces into the little holes next to your stereo and press outward, you should then be able to slide the stereo out of the dashboard.
Use the U-shaped radio removal tools. They are available from most auto parts stores. Once you get the tools, it should only take about two minutes to remove the radio. You insert the tools into the holes on the sides of the front of the radio, push them slightly outwards, and pull the radio out.
Remove the decorative cover to your 2001 Chevy Lumina stereo. Remove the stereo retaining screws. Slide the stereo out and remove the wiring harness. Remove the antenna cable.

i currently have the same prob...to my understanging the stock stereo runs along with the dash lighting, so did you remove the stock stereo? also check fuses on the driver kick panel

You have to unscrew the center console and work your way up.
