reach up under the dashboard by the light switch, feel around on the top of the switch for a small metal "button" about 1/4" in diameter. You have to depress this while pulling out on the knob from the front of the dash. It sometimes sticks so you have to "play" with it (move it in and out while holding down the button) and it will come out. The shaft is triangular in shape and can go back in any orientation, you just push it in until it "snaps" into place and you can not pull it out again.
Rotate the headlight switch knob left or right with headlights turned on.

The gear shift knob on a ford Ranger is pressed on tightly. A heat gun or hair dryer can be used to heat the knob to help remove it.
You have to reach up behind the dash and push a small spring loaded button on the headlight switch, then the knob and shaft will pull out as one.
Disconnect the battery. With one hand behind the dash and on the bottom of the switch you will feel a little spring loaded button. Pull the knob out and press the button and the knob will come out of the switch. Remove the wiring connecter and reverse the procedure.
Salvage yard or dealer.
Is it the "pull out" knob type? If so, there is a little silver button on the rear side of the switch. Depress this button and pull the knob all the way out of the switch Then unscrew the bezel to remove aswitch from the rear Ford recommends replacing the connector also.
The Knob is threaded , Just unscrew it by hand
puch the knob on the headlight switch in, then turn it clockwise about a quarter inch, then pull it out. Its actually very easy.
