I just programmed a new key for my '99 Venture today that I bought from an Ebay vendor, "Street Keys." I first took the blank (with the embedded chip, which is required to start the Chevy) to Walmart. The girl there cut the key for me for free, since I supplied the blank. Programming the cut key was easy. Take the original key and insert it into the ignition switch and turn the ignition on. Then, turn it off and remove the original key. You then have 15 seconds to insert the new key and turn the ignition on. Leave it on a few seconds and then turn it off and remove it. That's it. You should be good to go with the new key now. I was.
You will need to contact a dealership to program the remote key FOB on a 2001 Chevy Malibu. Stock remotes can only be programmed at Chevy dealerships.
This means that you have to program your key. To find out how to do this look in your owner's manual or find out here.
I've got a better question, why is this question in the Chevy venture forum ?

Yes the key is chipped. You need a pk3 key. You can get them from eBay for around $15 uncut.
Chevy and gmc keys are replaceable thru a dealer by providing the VIN off your vehicle Along with this, I can add. In Canadian currency, it's about $32 for a key and about $45 to program it.
