Measure straight across the wheel at the widest point; this would be the diameter of the wheel (in inches) "Wheels" (if you are talking about tire rims) come in whole sizes only; so rims can be purchased as 12" (very rare these days; maybe on a Smart Car, Honda Fit, etc), 15", 16", etc. Some vehicles now take a 20" rim as standard!
