I have a 2007 Ford Focus 4-door Sedan, and am currently installing my own audio system. I recommend you buy a new Head Unit to start; i recently installed a VR3 VR500CS-BT CD Car Stereo with Bluetooth. You will need a Housing for the subwoofer you decide to purchase; I'm working with a 10" Alpine Type-E subwoofer, a Capacitor because your battery won't likely support even the smallest of Amps while run running the car (Mines a Scorsche 500K 1 Farad), and most importantly, an AMP. Without the Amp, your sub will be a big, expensive, muffled speaker with crappy wiring.. You should buy wiring kits opposed to separate wires as needed, because it's cheaper in the end and likely your car won't need an extra 20' of any cable, because most kits fit in standard installation lengths with a little left over (bout 2' extra). You gotta wire the +12 of your Cap to the + terminal of your battery, and ground the - somewhere in your trunk or nearby. Your wiring kit for the Cap should come with an in-line fuse of around 100A, but you will need to charge the Cap when first hooking it up by placing a 1K resistor between the +12 wire from your batter and the Cap's + terminal until your multimeter reads at least 12V, otherwise your Cap will likely double as a beautiful fireworks display. Then, depending on your Sub woofers chosen, you'll have to connect the amp to it/them, i recommend you go here:
Open the rear hatch and throw it in, but PLEASE don't hook it up!

It's very easy to install a subwoofer on a hatchback, provided you are proficient with wiring.
Please be more specific and state whether or not you are going to install an amp or clarify that it is just a subwoofer.
In order to install a subwoofer you need: enclosure for sub, Amplifier, and an Amplifier kit. These three things can be found at an electronics store or online.
no, a subwoofer is not a amplifier a subwoofer is actually a speaker that is made for bass. an amplifier is what helps the subwoofer work and sound properly when you install a audio system in your automobile or home.
