When my pt cruiser went into limp mode it was because it needed a new camshaft position senor. The engine was limited to 2500 RPM. The sensor is on the top diver's side of the engine. It has two 10 mm bolts and a plug attached to it. After replacing the sensor I cleared the trouble code using an OBD II reader. If you do not have this then disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes will work. If the sensor was the problem then the car should run normal. The camshaft position sensor was $40.00 from Checkers.
The cause of the code will need repaired to get it out of limp in.
You have to fix the problem that caused the trouble codes that put it in limp mode.
