while the engine is running , put your + lead from your voltmeter on the armature lug( the big lead). take off your field wire from the generator (don't add power to the lead from the regulator or you will fry the regulator) add a power source to the field lug of the generator. the generator should start climbing, if you get 14.5 volts , the generator is good

The field winding in the stator is exposed to the full current generated by the rotor's winding.
the legal age to drive a tractor on a public road is 16 providing you have a full tractor licence. But you will not be able to drive a two seater tractor or one exceeding 20 tonnes

Full load amps for a three phase, 375KVA generator is 375 / (voltage in kV) / sqrt(3).
You can check good full service power generator in your local Sears store. They have different kind whatever you want, it could be portable, standby or solar and wind generator.

The series winding takes the full load current of the generator. So it require only a few turns to produce the required magnetic field and so the resistance is lower.
You did not say weather the light goes out and if the generator charges. At low idle a generator will not put out it full amps.
