You can find a Freon leak in a home Ac unit by using a leak detector. These instruments are capable of detecting trace amounts of Freon and pinpoint leaks.
Ac leaks are hard to find. there is a chemical that can be added to the Freon. Under a special light it will show up. If it is a small leak it may not show up, especially if its on the compressor behind the clutch.

It came from the factory charged with R12 Freon. As this refrigerant is extremely expensive and hard to find, I suggest you convert it over to R134 Refrigerant.
Chances are your leaking freon. There may be a leak in one of the seals.
