First, take the engine cover off, so you can get to the engine block from the inside of the van. Sit in the passenger seat and take off the air cleaner assembly. Take a look at the valve cover, up towards the front of the vehicle. Right beyond the valve cover, a little towards the middle, you should see the sensor, with a single wire harness going to it. You can check to see if it's bad by turning the key to ON (engine NOT running) and grounding out that wire -- the temperature gauge should go to full-hot.
Take note to drain the coolant before pulling that sensor out, if you really need to replace it.
The transmission temperature sensor on a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 is located on the driver's side of the transmission. It is just behind the bell housing. Look for a gold plug with a black plastic top.

A 1996 Dodge Ram does not use a mass airflow sensor. It has a MAP sensor mounted in front of the throttle body.
