Tail shaft housing is the rear end of the transmission where the drive line bolts up. On the Lincoln LS it is also where you fill up the transmission with Mercon V (transmission fluid)
2000 LS transmission fill plug locationFluid is added at a fill plug on the tailshaft housing (upper right hand side). You'll need to use a suction gun to get fluid up to that location.

I was looking at the 2000 Lincoln LS Owner Guide and it shows that the 5R55N automatic transmission does not have a fluid level dipstick

There is no dipstick for the transmission. To check the transmission you have to open the Transmission Resivior and see the fluid level in there.
