There are methods of doing this - and I've tried them a couple of times with some of my older Tauruii/Sables.
Here's my opinion: don't waste your time - it's so unreliable and vague.
I'm 99+% sure the 95 uses the current diagnostics system, OnBoard Diagnostic II (OBD II) so any local auto parts store that offers free code scanning / reading can do that on the 1995's.

The Mercury Sable and the Ford Taurus will have DOC in printed on the engine if they are dual overhead cam engines. The symbol should be on the top of the engine.
It will fit in the same year Taurus and Sable, nothing else.
You run the engine till warm then look underneath and see if the pump is leaking. A faulty pump leak is very visible in Taurus/Sable.
