Remove oil pan. Remove thrust bearing cap. Loosen all main caps a little. Use a piece of wire or small screwdriver to force the top half of the seal out. When you get it part way out you should be able to pull it out with pliers. Work the new seal in carefully and replace the other half in the cap. Retorque mains. Reassemble with new gaskets.
ANOTHER ANSWER:
Unfortunately, the rear main seal of a GM 350 a single piece, meaning that you'll need to remove either the transmission or the engine, pull the old seal, install a new one then put the engine or transmission back. The instruction given in the above answer only works for engines with split seals, and the 350 doesn't fit that category.
You didn't say what year. up until the earl 70's the 350 used a wick type seal which requires loosening all of the bearing caps and from then until the mid 80's they used a 2 piece neoprene seal.
how do you change a rear main seal in a Chevy 350 motor
You can either pull the engine are the transmission. But 1 are the other has to be removed to change the rear main seal. Your choice.
Yep, they have one. 1986 and older has a two piece rear main seal. 1987 and up has a one piece rear main seal.
Between 350 to 400.00 dollars depending on who does it.
YES it does. Must remove oil pan, Oil pump and rear main bearing cap to service the rear main seal.
If it is a late month of 1987( Build date) then it has a 1 piece solid round rear main seal in it and you will need to remove the transmission and fly-wheel and then pop the seal out and drive the new 1 in place. If it was built before late 1987 then you will have to remove the oil pan and rear main cap to service the rear seal. It will have a 2 piece seal in it.
