It's up on the thermostat housing. Follow your upper rad hose to the thermostat housing.

it is on the passenger side right behind where the exhaust pipes meet to form the y pipe
I've just finished the process I used a Hayes manual. (best thing I ever bought to fix a car) it will take your through step by step on how to do it. There are a few quirks that you need to figure out on your own. on my 97 firebird it took me a while to figure out how to disconnect the hydraulic clutch line. Other than that it was pretty smooth.
It is a little tight but it can be done very fast just make sure the engine is cool and you need a open end wrench to get to the nuts. Good luck.
from 97 till 2002 will fit 93-2002 all use the same size. 93 were basic, 94-97 basic or hatched, 98-2002 had additionally the honeycomb. They ALL fit each other Firebird, Formula, and TA.
being a 97 the first thing i would check is the condition of the fins on the rad if they are loose look no further if they are good and solid then the thermostat the radiator cap not holding pressure the fan belt too loose or crap in the rad good luck
