The Ford Mondeo ST220 could be jumping from 2nd gear due to a chipped gear or worn shifter fork. The transmission will probably need to be taken apart to be repaired.

It really is quite awkward to change a gaiter on a VW Golf however it can be done. The actual nylon/ leather gater is easy to remove, it has an elastic hem around the bottome of it which can be unfastened easily, or alternativley the retaining clip can be popped out with ease. The hardest part about changing the gaiter is removing the actual gear knob which can be very difficult, can offer any help on that, suffice to say its very hard.

There are two gear control cables which come from gear box to gear gaiter. Usually they need to be replaced, or one of them
On the gear-lever. Just pull it up before shifting it into gear. My girlfriend woke me up because of the same reason. Who drives a car without knowing how to reverse it?? :-D

incorrect gearbox oil. There is a lot of talk about the correct oil to use, even some Ford garages use the specified oil(which is incorrect). Some Ford garages do use a different oil. If you check out honestjohn website or Mondeo owners club sites they will tell you the correct/best oil to use in the gearbox. Rory
