How do you change a fuel pump on a 98 lumina?

In a 98 lumina sedan, you have to drop the fuel tank. this is tricky in that the wiring harness and fuel lines have to be disconnected before removal. the lines can be tough because the fuel filter has a compression fitting on one end and a quick disconnect fitting on the other end. The compression fitting may be rusted solid and you can't use a torch on it. ok.. the how to. First try to empty the tank. second, using jack stands and blocking the front wheels, get the car up as high as you possibly can. Disconnect the fuel filler tube from the tank. loosen (do not yet remove) the tank straps and get some room to see the top of the tank. carefully disconnect the wiring harness from the pump/sensor unit. disconnect the fuel pressure and return lines. check your clearances and make sure you have it all disconnected. carefully position a floor jack under the tank. support the tank gently. remove the tank straps, drop the tank and bring it out you will see the pump assy and a ring that has tangs on it on the top of the tank. using a hammer and (preferrably) a brass drift push the ring to the left (counter clockwise) and as it loosens just unscrew it and pull out the pump. remember that the pump and the sending unit are an assembly. treat it gently if you plan on saving it! while you're there, be sure to replace that fuel filter!!! put it back in the way you got it out good luck!
