You can adjust the clutch pedal free play but not the clutch itself.
most clutches need free play adjustment with manual linkage is next to left side of transmition
You have worn out front end / steering parts. here's something you need to CHECK. PIP-MAN ARM, iDLER ARM, tie-rod ends, center drag link and the ball joints. You will probley find that the IDLER ARM is worn out. Replace parts as needed and then have the front end aligned that will fix your problem.
Yes. Both years used the NV3500 (manual) or 4L60E (auto) for the S10 and 1500, and the NV4500 (manual) and 4L80E (auto) for the 2500 and 3500. Note that trying to swap out a 4L60E for a 4L80E is NOT a simple "plug and play" swap, in case you're getting that idea in your head.
You cannot adjust the clutch on a newer gmc truck because they come with self adjusting clutches. If you have no free play at the top of the pedal you may have to adjust the linkage to give free play.
It won't be a simple "plug and play" swap. You'll have to get your ECM reflashed, as the ECM from that 97 is programmed to work with an electronically controlled transmission, whereas the 1988 transmission is mechanical.
