The fuel pump in a 1989 Ford Taurus moves the gasoline from the gas tank, up through the fuel lines and to the fuel injection system. Without a functioning fuel pump, the Taurus cannot move under its own power. In the event your Taurus suffers a fuel pump failure, if you have basic automotive repair experience, you can save yourself the labor charge by replacing the pump yourself.
1.
Step 1
Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using the battery wrench. Place the wheel chocks at the front and rear of the front-left tire.
2.
Step 2
Move the jack underneath the gas tank and raise the jack head until it contacts the bottom of the gas tank. Unbolt the two gas tank retaining straps using the socket set.
3.
Step 3
Lower the fuel tank several inches with the floor jack until you can reach above it, and disconnect the fuel lines and fuel filler neck using the screwdriver. Disconnect the fuel pump wiring harness from the fuel pump by hand.
4.
Step 4
Lower the tank the rest of the way and pull it out from under the Taurus with the floor jack. Set the tank on level ground.
5.
Step 5
Wrap the rag around the tip of the screwdriver, then place the tip against the lip of the fuel pump retaining ring. Tap the screwdriver handle with the rubber mallet until the retaining ring spins counterclockwise. Remove the ring by hand.
6.
Step 6
Lift the fuel pump up and out of the gas tank by hand. Insert the new fuel pump into the tank, providing enough room for the fuel level float to move up and down unimpeded by the tank walls.
7.
Step 7
Slide the fuel pump retaining ring back into position, then tighten it down in reverse of how you removed it. Set the gas tank back on the floor jack and roll it back underneath the Taurus.
8.
Step 8
Raise the gas tank up with the floor jack until you can reconnect the fuel lines, fuel filler neck and fuel pump wiring harness in reverse of how you disconnected them. Raise the tank the rest of the way, then bolt the retaining straps back into position with the socket set.
9.
Step 9
Lower the Taurus off the jack stands with the floor jack. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery with the wrench, then move the wheel chocks before driving the Taurus. Prime the fuel system by turning the ignition key to the "Run" position for 10 seconds, shutting it off, then repeating twice more.
