There are valve cover bolts around the perimeter of the valve cover. You want these tight but not as tight as you can get them.
Check the specs for the vehicle you are working on (You can find them on the net if you do not have the manual) and the torque requirements will be there. Do not over torque the bolts as removing a broken valve cover bolt is a pain. Good luck.
Your head bolts are located under your valve cover. Take your valve cover off and you will see them. Hope this info. helped.

There are 4 bolts going through the center of the valve cover.
The valve cover on a 1996 Cadillac is held on by several bolts around the edge. After removing any hoses, fuel rail, or anything else in the way, remove the bolts to pull the valve cover off.
Remove each valve cover (four bolts.) Remove the gasket and set a new one in place. Set the valve cover in place and tighten the bolts to spec.
89inch pounds is the torque rating for the valve cover bolts
Loose, broken, or worn valve train component. Remove the valve cover to find the problem.
you just pull the three bolts holding the valve cover down. the bolts run right down the middle of the valve covers. pull the valve cover off, replace the old gasket with the new one and tighten the valve covers back on.
You need to remove the valve cover and check the bolts holding the rocker arm to the head. There are at least six bolts holding the rocker arm , and I dont think they would all come loose at the same time. After you remove the valve cover you may find that you have a loose or broken valve especially if you have a skip in the engine or a rattle or both.
CAUTION: Some models are equipped with anti-theft-radio make sure you have the activation code before disconnecting battery * Disconnect negative battery cable * Detach the accelerator cable from the cable guides on the valve cover (It's not necessary to remove the cable guides unless you're replacing the valve cover) * Disconnect the PCV and breather hoses from the valve cover * Remove the spark plug wire cover bolts remove the cover and then remove the spark plug wires * Remove the bolts that attach the upper timing belt cover to the valve cover * Remove the valve cover bolts and then remove the valve cover
