There is a small spring in the door latch assy that breaks. the whole latch assy is around $40 and not too hard to replace. after i got the new one I compared them and I think you could make the spring it looks like the one on a vhs tape cover only larger. at $40 I didn't think it was worth the effort. now my pass side is doing it. when the driver side did it you had to go around to the pass side and reach through as it wouldn't unlock with the key.

Push all the door locks down manually and then lock the drivers door with your key if it will not stay locked when you push the lock down and shut the door.
I think this is a safety measure to keep you from locking your keys in the car. Try locking it with the key after the door is shut.
The answer is: the two rods in the door have been bent and need to be separated so as not to hit the other one.
Remove a battery cable for about 5 min. While waiting to install it open the drivers door. Install cable without shuting the door lock it with the lock button on the door panel(power door lock button), now shut the door and unlock it with the key.. This should work it did for me
I just bought one and it does...however, when you shut the drivers side door it pops the unlock button and unlocks all the doors. I have to put the key in the door and turn it to lock all the doors at once.
Lock
This worked for me: open the car with the door key. Sit in and shut the door. Now operate the door lock using the lock tab on the drivers door four times very quickly ((lock then open four times). Press the close button on the fob. If the door locks again, you've done it. May well work for other cars too.
sunfire drivers door latch won t work
the door switches are inside the door lock its self
Use a small screwdriver or ink pen to apply pressure to the latch while pulling on the door handle.
You will find one of your door locks is defective, with the doors all shut and you inside try to lock and open each door at a time and you will find one that is stiff or notchy to operate, that will be the defective one. You will probably find if you lock that one manually the central locking will lock the rest but don't leave it too long to replace the door lock/mechanism or you will end up with a door that will not open from inside or out like me. Anyone know how to get mine open ?
Is it the lock button on top of the door or the latch that holds the door shut? If its the latch just pull door handle then flick catch back round with a screwdriver. Its a C lock that spins round when door shuts locking the door in place, when handle is pulled, the C lock is released and spins back with the effort of the door opening. Hope this helps
