Drain all the coolant from the radiator. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the engine. Remove the aluminum thermostat housing. Should be held in place with 2 bolts. There you will find the thermostat.

The coolant drain on a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am is located on the bottom of the radiator on the right side. It allows coolant to be quickly removed during maintenance and flushes.
The thermostat housing is held down by two bolts. Remove the bolts, remove the old thermostat. Install new thermostat with a new gasket. Reinstall housing. Fill coolant. Warm engine up, and recheck coolant level.
Should be located in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from radiator Remove housing Make note how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Replace thermostat and gasket Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an air lock Start engine and look for leaks Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater on Re-check coolant level
NO, but some will leak out when loosening the radiator hose. A LOT will leak out when completely removing the hose, so have a bucket on standby.
