The back-pressure in an automobile is determined by the design of the tailpipe and exhaust system. There should be no obstruction in the tailpipe which results in an increase in engine back-pressure and is harmful to the engine. Custom or after-market mufflers and tail-pipe cores enhance or retard back-pressure, depending on the design and installation personnel and may improve or degenerate engine performance and should be used with care.
