The check engine light on a 94 Buick Olds Cutlass is read using an OBDII code reader. It is connected to the port under the dash which interfaced directly with the reader.
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
I've had problems with the Intake Manafold and also with the spark plug towers burning out setting off the check engine light. I know there are more but this is just my personal experience with my 1999 cutlass.

Disconnect the battery, wait 10 minutes, and reconnect.
The battery light is letting you know that the alternator is not charging the battery. Check to see if alternator is any good. Also check to see if belt is hooked up.
get a test light and see if there is juice going into the switch and juice coming out of it.
Once it warms up it goes into closed loop. Meaning that the computer takes control. Is your check engine light on? Depending on what "bad" means it could be any number of things.
