Better known as a smog pump. Check with state inspections if they require emision testing. As far as if it will hurt the motor, No it will not, an the increase in horse power is really not significant.Most problems are with the gulp valve or diverter valve which causes back fire when throttling back. Air pump failure is due to carbon siezure from check valves on exaust.
