I've been trying to find this out too (for a mark III Golf). The smell's more noticeable in heavy traffic, I sometimes see smoke coming out of the air vents when the air's not switched on, and find condensation on the windscreen. It seems to be a problem with the cooling system. The coolant leaks onto the engine where it's burnt off. Maybe the heater core?
When you smoke it, it smells like burnt marshmallow, and coffee mixed.
A rubber burning smell and smoke near your two front tires could be the result of sticking calipers. The brake line could also be the cause of the burning smell.
Possibly a problem with one of your belts?
Sounds like you have a blown headgasket or cracked head. The smoke and smell is likely the oil leaking from your broken engine and burning off.
A wisp of smoke rose from the extinguished candle, disappearing into the night air.
You may have oil on the exhaust, once this has burnt off the smoke should stop.

The smoke from your muffler has a smell because what is coming out of the muffler is the products of the incomplete combustion of your fuel. Some of those products are gases and vapors that have color and some are dark but small particles - that is what you call smoke. But some of what comes out are various chemicals that your nose detects as odors.
Check the fan motor itself. It may be shorting enough to cause it to run hot. the smell may by from the motor itself.
