AnswerCheck the park safety relay and the associated switch on the brake pedal. Most vehicles will not allow you to shift into gear without having your foot on the brake pedal. If any part of that mechanism is out of adjustment or has failed, you may not be able to shift out of park.

*my safety switch broke twice already and I just twist the key half way-put it in neutral-start engine and then put it in gear. You can manually pull the switch up=I learned exactly wear to stick my hand and pull up on the switch and it will go out of park.

I just got sick of it sticking....you can spray lubricant on it.

As a safety design, you do need to step on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If you are doing this and still can't shift, there may be something wrong in the transmission.

Why is your 1993 subaru loyale stuck in park?

Be sure to apply the brake before trying to shift out of park. If you apply the brake and the car still won't shift out of park, do not try to force it. The problem could be a failure of the mechanism that releases the shifter.

How do you fix a 1993 Mercury Villager that will not shift from Reverse to Park?

In my experience , my villager would not shift from park to anything. Found a T20 or T25 torx screw under dash by steering column to be really loose on shifter linkage. Works great now!
