The Air France Concorde's accident was one of the reasons. When the aircraft was taking off, the left engines went up in flames. What had happened was, a strip of metal from a Boeing had fell from the engine at takeoff. The highly pressured tires of the Concorde exploded when they went on the metal. A very large fragment of tire hit the underside of the fuel tanks of the left delta wing. This created a shock wave which ruptured the fuel tanks. Aviation fuel poured over the engines. But even then, a spark is needed to cause the fuel to burn. The black boxes which record the pilot's conversations revealed that Captain Christian Marty, the captain, had had trouble with the landing gear. What had happened was that another fragment of tire had hit and broke a wire that operated the landing gear. The halved wire would create sparks if they made contact, which, they did. The sparks spread over the delta wings and ignited the fuel, which ignited the engines.
When this was discovered, engineers set to improving the landing gear and reinforcing the fuel tanks. But, the main reason Concordes were put out of business was that the money to maintain and build more Concordes ran out.
