The planes were used as flying missiles to crash into the World Trade Center (both towers) and the Pentagon. The 4th plane that crashed into a field in, Shanksville, Pennsylvania (after the passengers fought back) was probably going to crash into the Capital Building in Washington DC, (which is easier to find than the White House).
