You pick up a person, and fetch their luggage.
It depends on the airport. Sometimes they will ask you to leave or put the pet in a carrier, but other times they won't say a thing. It just depends.
Sail up the Hudson River.
The area where you pick up your luggage at an airport is called a baggage claim.

Take the Goethals Bridge to Staten Island, then the Verananno Bridge to Long Island (beautiful Brooklyn, that is.) Jump on the Belt Pkwy Eastbound and you're headed right for JFK. HOWEVER, if I don't want to fight the hassle of the traffic (and it can be a killer at commuter time,) I'd pick up Public Transportation at Newark Airport (EWR) and ride a bus to JFK. It's a lot easier on the nerves. There is also rail transportation available from Newark right to JFK.

Always make sure to clean up after your pet when outside, keep them on a leash in public spaces, and respect others' boundaries when it comes to interacting with your pet. Additionally, provide proper training and socialization for your pet to ensure they are well-behaved around others.
The first step is to deplane and go through immigration/passport control. Then you pick your luggage up from the correct carousel. The next stage is to go through customs and agriculture. Finally you either recheck your bag and go through security to get to a connecting flight or you leave the airport.
