At Kill Devil Hills, NC, which is on an island off the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Because there was absolutely nothing in Kill Devil Hills at the time, they used the telegraph office in Kitty Hawk, which is about four miles away. This led the press to announce that they'd really flown from Kitty Hawk, which is not the case.

On December 17, 1903, Orville&Wilbur Wright are accredited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight.
Wilbur as the 'senior' brother, and the most 'aviation-minded' was actually due to have the honour of the first flight on 14th December, 1903. He did launch but dropped a wingtip and came to an abrupt halt. The next turn, agreed by the brothers, was thus Orville's, and after the aircraft was repaired, he made a successful ''first flight' on 17th December. Wilbur made the next flight of several on the same day.
