Their first successful flight was in December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, NC. They spent the next two years developing it into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft using controls. From 1906-1907 they built about seven Model As- the first aircraft design to enter serial production anywhere in the world.
For more than 4 years after that first flight at Kitty Hawk, the US Government refused to accept the fact that man had flown in a heavier-than-air machine. In 1908, the US Government began to purchase an airplane from the Wright Brothers that the Army Signal Corps called "Aeroplane No. 1". Around the same time, they also purchased a "Dirigible No. 1" designed by Thomas S. Baldwin.
Orville Wright and Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge crashed in 1908; Selfridge died and Orville was badly injured. They had to suspend flying until the plane could be repaired and Orville could recover. The Army Signal Corps didn't actually purchase the plane until 1909 after the testing had resumed.
After 1908, the Brothers seemed to focus a lot on suing people for patent infringement. Wilbur died in 1912 of typhoid fever. Orville got tired of fighting the legal battles and intended to sell the company; he left in 1915. WWI began in 1917.
