technically no - there were successful attempts at gliding and using kites to lift a man into the air at least as early as the 17th century but no one that early understood how wings/lift worked and so couldn't design or build an airplane that flew consistantly or predictably - kites carrying people are not really a type of plane even though they are a flying wing as they become uncontrollable as soon as their line is cut
lift was not understood until about the 1890s, mostly with the wind tunnel experiments of the wright brothers, which is a major reason they were successful as they were the first to fully understand why wings work
