Lifeboats were needed in case of a disaster out at sea and since the Titanic hit an iceberg, an evacuation was necessary. 20 lifeboats were onboard; 16 wooden ones and 4 collapsible. There was supposed to be 36 but the number was shortened because the deck looked crowded and "unsightly" with so many. And people didn't think that a ship that supposedly unsinkable would need so many lifeboats onboard.
