a semi fixed cost moves upward in a step where semi variable cost begining at a given base level

No. Total cost includes fixed costs, too. Even Semi Variable costs include Fixed costs...??? So whats the difference?
An example of semi variable direct costs is wages. Since semi variable costs are partially fixed and variable, regular labor is fixed costs, as production rises and workers have overtime the overtime is considered the variable cost.
If electricity expense is dependant on production level then it is variable expenses other wise some of expenses may be of variable nature while some part is fixed or semi variable nature as well.

Formula for Total Cost: Fixed Cost + Variable Cost + Semi-Variable Cost if there is no semi-variable cost then fixed cost + variable cost is a total cost. if we devide the total cost with volume as well then it will be cost per unit not total cost
Direct labor is variable cost as it varies with the change in level of production of units.

When you see TC = Total Costs on a break even chart it stands for Variable, Semi-variable and fixed costs....thus the total cost.
If direct labor don't change with number of units product then it is fixed cost but if it changes with the change in production units then it Is variable cost.
The three types of cost you are referring to are Fixed, Semi Variable and Variable Costs. On a well though out COA the janitorial costs would fall under administrative costs. Thus fixed.
Semi variable cost is an expense which is both a fixed and variable cost. It shows similarities to telephone bills. One must pay line, rental and on top of that a price that depends on how heavy one is using the service. So it changes with output. Another example is satellite television. A price for the box must be paid monthly and to get additional movies, more money has to be given.
An example would be telephone bill, electricity, commission for selling items
