Your memory is sort of a muscle. If you want to keep it in shape, you need to keep to a fitness regime. Spend a lot of time reading and doing memory puzzles and you should find your memory improving. While your brain doesn't build "mass" like a muscle, it does need to get worked out to be used properly and kept sharp. Let it go to waste, and you'll likely find entropy setting in.
