The single most shocking aspect of attending college is the initial shock of tuition. Everyone is aware that college is expensive but it is sometimes surprising to learn how much college actually costs. However, it is important to realize that tuition is far from the only expense related to college and every student should be prepared for every cost they will incur.

Tuition is the single most costly aspect of college. It is almost always in the thousands of dollars range for a full time student. But there are other costs that come along with being a college student that are also quite expensive. The next largest cost is also the single most surprising: textbooks. Textbooks have always been known to be expensive but a single edition can now cost up to $350. When each semester comes with four or five classes, this cost adds up very quickly. They have become so expensive that many professors have attempted to work a classroom without using one. Others, far less sympathetic to their student's wallets, will assign multiple texts and expect students to have ready access to them from the first day of class.

Other factors that add to the cost of college are living expenses, gas, and poor personal choices. Living expenses will vary depending on if a person decides to live on or off campus. Dorm living is not ideal but it is fairly cheap compared to living off of campus. It also has the benefit of being near classes and reducing gas prices by a lot of money. If one chooses to live off campus, gas will be a major factor in making a budget. It is also a well known fact that college students make poor decisions. Every student must be prepared to pay the fines for those poor decisions.

There are a lot of costs associated with getting a college education. The better prepared one is to pay for those costs, the less stress college will cause that person. It is important to understand that tuition is not the only cost that needs to be taken into account when preparing for college expenses.
