Bari, the second largest city in southern Italy, is not known as a tourist town, but primarily to travellers as an exit from Italy. From Bari, people take ferries to Croatia and Albania. But, if you take the time, you will find there is a great deal to do in this largely undiscovered holiday attraction.

Bari is an ancient city, with many interesting buildings from past eras, including the Basillica of Saint Nicolas, where remnants of the Saint are buried, and the Castle del Monte, a unique medieval fort with both Gothic and Islamic architectural influences.The local cuisine is distinct and notable, offering dishes created from the wide variety of ingredients available in the region, in particular their delicious mussels and sea urchins. The local wines are also noteworthy, including a very good Primitivo. In an effort to raise the tourist profile of Bari, the city authorities have made the ancient part of the city more accessible. All night bars and restaurants are now found there, keeping the Bari Vecchio buzzing into the wee hours.
