Originally Germany built 4 or 5 U-boats for Russia during their war with Japan in 1904 (Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905). After the war, Germany took one of those Karp class submarines and commissioned it U1 in 1906.

In WW1 and WW2 U- Boats were produced to disrupt enemy shipping. In war if you use submarines to sink enemy ships you ensure that the enemy doesn't get supplies and also your own ships are at less risk if the submarines sink warships. In WW2 the Axis used U- Boats to stop the Americans from giving supplies to the UK and the Soviet Union.

The Allies used U boats too, but they were called submarines. The were used to attacke enemy merchant shipping and warships mainly but also for recon patrols, landing spies and saboteurs, and suppllying arms and munitions covertly. ( Casement's Irish rebels in 1916 had lots of Mausser pistols shipped in via U Boat )

First; U-Boats are submarines; the name is an abbreviation of 'Unterseeboots", which is German for 'undersea boats." Second; the Germans used them in WW1 and WW2 because their surface navy was inferior to the British Navy, and Germany needed to close the Atlantic to America's resupply of Great Britain. Their surface navy was incapable of doing so, so they tried via U-Boat.

The name 'U-Boat' is an anglicized meaning, e.g. English language version, of the German word U-Boot [ˈuːboːt], as a shortened name for Unterseeboot, which means "undersea boat".

What were uboats made for?

Uboats were made to attack and sink merchant ships carrying supplies to Great Britain. Germany knew if they managed to cut Britain's supplies off then they would be unable to continue the war. They did this by launching torpedos which blew holes in enemy ships under the waterline, causing them to take on water and sink. As the war progressed, more and more were built to combat military ships as well as merchant vessels. Hope this helps.
