It was something that all commoners (the third estate) could identify with. Just before the revolution, bread was 8 sous (cents) for a four pound loaf. At the start of the revolution it was 15 sous a loaf. Two loaves per day were needed to feed a family of four. The average common worker made 20 to 30 sous per day. People could not even afford to eat.

Hey, I am doing an assessment on the French Revolution as we speak and as I remember they actually ate near to nothing. As Louis' wife said when royals said 'the commons have no bread' she said 'let them have cake.' Sorry but I know that wasn't alot of help.
A responsive government, bread and hope.

The economy was really poor during the French Revolution, one of the reasons that it occurred. For example, the prices of bread were rising at alarming costs, and the people began to starve. Bread and grain were a major factor for the lives of the French at the time. The French were heavily in debt due to helping out the Americans in the American Revolution, the French-Indian War, as well as the expenditures the monarchy racked up, such as Marie Antoinette's wardrobe. Overall, the economy was TERRIBLE. There's more information here if you need it!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_the_French_Revolution#Economics_And_Finances
