Right now people don't have any idea why McKinley was assassinated, but they have small things that are clues. The assassin's name was Leon Czolgosz. He was a polish man. There is also a woman named Emma Goldman. She was in a police station during the day McKinley was assassinated. Before news broke out that the president was dead she questioned a police officer about what would happen if the president was dead. She was then accused of the murder of McKinley. She wouldn't speak up and just went away to jail. Those are the only leads of the assassination.
Leon Czolgosz killed him because he supported anarchism and was angered at how much the wealthy Americans god.
President William McKinley gave a speech at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 5, 1901. The next day, while attending a reception, an anarchist named Leon F. Czolgosz went to shake hands with McKinley. Czolgosz fired two bullets at the President with a revolver concealed by a handkerchief in his right hand. An ambulance rushed President McKinley to the hospital for emergency surgery. McKinley seemed to be recovering for a while, but he died on September 14, 1901.
The killer, Leon Czolgosz, who was probably insane thought the President "Was an enemy of good working people ". There was a world-wide anarchy movement active at around that time. ( see the related link)
Leon Czolgosz (McKinley's assassin) believed there was a great injustice in American society, an inequality which allowed the wealthy to enrich themselves by exploiting the poor. He concluded that the reason for this was the structure of government itself. Then he learned of a European crime which changed his life: On July 29, 1900, King Umberto I of Italy had been shot dead by anarchist Gaetano Bresci. Bresci told the press that he had decided to take matters into his own hands for the sake of the common man. The assassination shocked and galvanized the American anarchist movement, and Czolgosz is thought to have consciously imitated Bresci. His last words were: "I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people - the good working people. I am not sorry for my crime."
