When was Medicaid established?
The Medicaid program was established in 1964 with a passage of Title XIX of the Social Security Act and is jointly financed and administered by the Federal and state Governments. Each state's rules differ both as to financial eligibility and medical services provided. In order to demonstrate eligibility, applicants must show that both their income and assets conform to the limits of the state's Medicaid program. Medicaid covers both needy elderly people and needy younger people, mostly unwed mothers.1964
