The Torah (Exodus ch.20) prohibits working on the Sabbath; and this is traditionally understood to refer to the 39 forms of labor that were needed in building the Tabernacle. Among these labors was the fixing of machines and instruments. Since a person who is playing a musical instrument may be tempted to tune it (i.e. fixing a machine or instrument), Rabbinical Judaism has banned the playing of instruments on the Sabbath in order to prevent the temptation to break the law from arising. On weekdays, music may be found in Orthodox synagogues in the context of social events such as the dinner after a Bar Mitzva ceremony. In the prayers, however, the presence of Musical Instruments is felt to be an imitation of Christian practices and is avoided.
