Well it's not completely known why the American Cheetah went extinct. They likely died off with a large number of other North American animals (American Lions, Horses, Mammoths etc.) at the end of the last ice age, or in the Younger Drias event that followed shortly thereafter.

Some ideas as to the cause of the mass extinction are the abrupt climate change, human pressure, or a possible meteoric/comet impact or pandemic.

Improvement:

The American Cheetah is actually not a Cheetah at all and has no relation to the Cheetah we know now. It was closely related to the Mountain Lion.

Cheetahs are becoming extinct because people that live near them have to farm, and the more food they need to grow, the more space they need. They have to move farther into the cheetah's territory, so when the cheetahs go onto the territory, they are killed by hunters. They cannot climb trees, so when escaping the hunters, the only thing they can do is run, which will not save a cheetah when it is running from a hunter's car or truck, or even a bullet.

They are also poached for their fur, which sells on the black market. Many cheetahs end up as high heels or purses. Cheetahs are also captured live to be sold as black market exotic pets. This not only removes the cheetah from the population, but any cubs they may have eventually parented as well. As the population dwindles, so does the DNA pool, which can cause additional population problems.

There are two main threats to the cheetah. These are habitat loss and poaching. The primary reason that cheetahs are hunted is because the local cattle herders consider them a threat to livestock.

If cheetahs were to become extinct it would most likely be from poaching for their fur and other valuable parts of them.

There is no clear evidence suggesting the cause. In fact it is strongly debated whether they are really cheetahs or cougars, based on the ambiguous fossil evidence that has been found.
