No, the story is fiction. The father, Ralf, was based on the real-life commandant, Rudolf Hoess. And Auschwitz certainly existed, but the idea that it was possible to crawl under the fence is absurd. In reality, the fences had a high-voltage current and the whole of the main site at Auschwitz was surrounded by a 'no-go' strip at least 300 yards wide. Anyone seen in the 'no-go' area was shot on sight. See the link.

No, the Boy in the Striped Pajamas is not a true story or even based on one. It is a fable by John Boyne. There are some realistic points though. Such as:

  • The camp. "Out-With" is really "Auschwitz".
  • The "Showers". At Auschwitz, Jews were told they were going to take a shower.
  • Ralf, Bruno's father is based on Rudolf Hoess, the first real-live Commandant of Auschwitz.
  • The Fury, is Furher, which is Hitler.

These points make it unrealistic:

  • MOST Jewish children were immediately gassed.
  • Bruno and Shmuel would have never been able to get that close.
  • The fence was electrical and Bruno would have been shot.
  • Shmuel would have never been able to escape to that part of the fence.

It has most of the classifications of a fable.

A fable is defined as a story with a clear moral message, and one that places less emphasis on the characters and settings, and more on the plot and what actually happens in the story. Fables also usually are short and have animals with human characteristics rather than human characters.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a fable, because it contains half of these classifications;

- A clear moral message (compassion)

- More emphasis on plot (hence the limited descriptions)

- Simple language

Though it is longer than a traditional fable, it is still classified as one
